Don’t Let Your Posture Play Havoc with Thyself and the Game

Filed under: Golf Tips — Golfer @ 10:45 am

A very effective and simple tip that we often oversee is the golf swing posture. The angles that are formed by the shoulders, spine, and neck at the setup, will define the quality of your swing.

A golfer with a slapdash, laid back posture will more often than not have a slipshod and erratic golf swing. An upright, rigid, and a choppy swing is rendered from a golfer with an erect posture.

How Does The Golf Swing Posture Matter?

The spinal cord is the pivot axis, surrounding which the whole golf swing will rotate. Thus the angles which the spine forms will ultimately define the motion and angles of the entire swing.

The Slothful , slovenly Slump

A curved spine and sloppy shoulders define a slothful golf swing posture. The spine is a wet noodle with virtually no or little structure and form.

As you see in the picture above, it shows a classic drooped posture. You will notice the exaggeration in the curved spine and the slumped shoulders. By virtue of low shoulders, the hands are inevitably and consequently low that is almost down to the knees. A wilted golf posture makes it impossible to give a good swing. Without any defined spine angle, the swing becomes void of any solid around which it can turn.

Ironically, some slacked golf postures aren’t lackadaisical. They are simply too tall for their clubs. Just to reach to the golf grip, they have to bend down significantly. If you are serious for avoiding this happen to you, go and get fit to get your clubs to the proper length.

The Uptight Upright

While this posture is not as serious as the slouch, an overdone uprightness in the golf swing posture is quite common with the concomitant swing issues. Owing to the extra tautness, the body becomes too rigid and is unable to make a fluent turn.

The picture above isn’t a butler- unfortunately it’s a golfer with an unduly upright posture. A stiff posture will lead to a stiff swing. It becomes very difficult to be able to make a proper turn during the backswing without adequate bend in the waist and the knees.

Most of the upright golfers are seen very analytical in their setup. Angles are important; nevertheless a relaxed and athletic posture is equally important.

The Proper Golf Swing Posture

The ideal posture for golf is neither too rigid nor too relaxed. You have to keep your spine as straight as possible and your waist adequately bended. You should virtually feel your weight onto the balls of your feet. This will make for a perfect, athletic, and a powerful posture.

To excel the befitting golf posture, it is facile to start without a golf club. To start with, stand normally keeping your arms to the sides. Then bend from your waist until you have your arms dangling freely, without letting it touch your legs. Bend your knees, clasping your hands together. Once you get comfortable with this posture with practice, it will become your second nature.

  4. Correct posture seems like such a simple thing to take care of, but it really is something you have to constantly think about.
