Exploring Golfing Grips
The grip is the key and the only connection to the golf club. If you place your hands on the golf club properly and meticulously, you will find yourself in better control of the position of the club’s face. Your body turns to generate power during the swing. So as your body rotates, the golf club must rotate at the same speed. In precise terms, the club and the body must turn as a team, i.e.; together.
The weak left hand for the right-handed golfer is one of the major erratic among the golfers. Using the simple procedure as shown below will enable you to play with accuracy and power.
The Left Hand (Top Hand Grip)
Follow the Dots
The dots shown above on the glove indicate the position that the golf club should take in the grip.
Connect the Dots
Now hold the club nearly 3 feet in the air and place the club at an angle though the fingers. The club should rest above the first joint of the index finger, along the dots and should touch the base of the little finger.
Thumb Position
With the club in the fingers and at the proper angle, the left thumb should be placed towards the rear side of the shaft.
With the said position, while looking at your grip, you should be able to see the middle finger of your top hand and the knuckles of the index finger. You will also see a “V” created by forefinger of the lead hand and thumb and further it should point back towards the right shoulder.
The Trailing Hand (Bottom Hand) Grip
If you play right handed, your bottom or trailing hand is your right hand and consequently it is the dominant hand for majority of the people. The positioning of this hand assumes significance in delivering a powerful blow without overpowering the top hand.
For the correct placing of the bottom hand on the club, follow the procedures below:
- Firstly, identify the 3 sections of the middle, ring and the index fingers.
- Now with the club in your top hand with a perfect top handgrip, set the last joint of the index finger of the bottom hand under the shaft. Further, the hand should be properly set at a downward angle. Place the club handle so that it touches the dots in sync. Now, you will see the grip of the club handle as shown in the 2nd picture.
- Use the lifeline of your bottom or trailing palm with the lifeline cover of your lead hand or top hand.
- Also, make sure that the “V” that is formed by the forefinger of your bottom or trailing hand and the thumb, is pointing towards your shoulder area / back ear i.e.; the 1 o’ clock position. This “V” position that is formed should be parallel to the “V” formed on your top hand which is illustrated in the photo by the double arrows.

The perfect shot is so dependent on the golfing grip. Great tips!

The dots in the photographs were helpful, and the instructions were clear. I think suggestions for stiffs should have been included as well.

What about gloves? I wear gloves because I get blisters, but I have seen other golfers not wearing them- Do you think gloves improve or hinder a grip or is it a personal preference?
