The importance of golf etiquette
The general opinion about a golfer would most probably be that of a person who remains dressed in plaid pants and boring sweater vests and other conventional and boring golf attire. However the type of clothing which people prefer to have while playing this royal game has undergone constant transformations. But it is still expected out of experienced professionals to follow proper golf attire and some necessary golf etiquettes while playing the game.

The most common and least expected golf attire comprises of a collared shirt which is teamed up with a long pant instead of the casual jeans and the necessary golf shoes. Some other golf etiquettes which need to be followed by an individual include:
- It is extremely important to report well in time for a game of golf. A golfer needs to be there in the golf green well in tee time, after having parked their car, doing the usual round of warm up and practice, purchase the balls and pick up a cart and reach the field where the rest of the team is waiting for the golfer. Any delay in reporting on time reflects the lack of consideration for other’s time on the part of the concerned golfer.
- Golf etiquettes require the golfer to leave behind their cell phones while going ahead for a game on the field. The mobile phones can be conveniently left in the car or locker room. But under no circumstances should they be carried off to the field where their constant beeping may hamper the surrounding atmosphere and concentration of the player.
- It is important to understand the preferences and gaming style of other golfers. Golf etiquettes expect an individual to understand the rules of their fellow golf players and respect them even if they believe that the rules are completely wrong. The main aim is to promote mutual respect and team spirit here.
- One of the most important of all the golf etiquettes is the time-honored conventions which states that an individual should observe absolute silence while playing the shots. Even if it is some other golfer who is going to hit the ball, it is expected of a pro to remain silent and steer clear from the direct line of vision for the ease of the player who is aiming the shot.
A large number of people might like to believe that the golfing rules are extremely archaic and outdated. The youngsters today generally end up building an impression that golf is a game which dates back to a slower paced time deep down in the history. However people who have been able to appreciate the fine nuances of this game can understand that golf is a game which can provide respite from the hustle bustle of the busy city life. Although golf is considered as a highly competitive game, the golf etiquettes help to teach the player the finest nuances of cooperation, respect for others and their time, concentration, mental power among several others. Perhaps this is the reason why it is still referred to as a gentleman’s game.

I really never knew that there is such thing as “golf etiquette”. It’s like an unspoken promise between the golfers.

I didn’t know that golf clothes were considered etiquette. The timing, silence, and cell phones seem like common sense, while respected how a person plays seems like it would be less well- known.
I didn’t appreciate the closing remark on how golf is a “gentleman’s game”.

Question - Please can you help?
Four golfers are approaching the last hole on the course and the modest wager rides on the result thereof.
One golfer is “out-of-the-hole” having put two in the water and two are on the fairway approaching the green, one for 3 and one for 4 (it’s a par 5). The fourth is in the very light rough left of the green also for 4. He has not located his ball. Within a short amount of time (certainly within the allowed 5 minutes) the others play out and shake hands and complete the hole and the score cards.
The fourth golfer desperately looking for his ball sees that the contest is over and leaves the green and course without finding his ball. His question is:
What is the rule for playing out of turn (understood that there is no penalty)?
More importantly – What are the right manners for all 4 of the golfers? In the interest of “speeding up play”, surely it is better for all golfers and their caddies to assist with ball finding?
In particular – when the contest is still being competed, is it not good etiquette to assist with finding the ball so that the contest can be completed without one player feeling aggrieved that his ball is lost under circumstances where not all was done by all parties to find it?
