Question - Please can you help?

Four golfers are approaching the last hole on the course and the modest wager rides on the result thereof.

One golfer is “out-of-the-hole” having put two in the water and two are on the fairway approaching the green, one for 3 and one for 4 (it’s a par 5). The fourth is in the very light rough left of the green also for 4. He has not located his ball. Within a short amount of time (certainly within the allowed 5 minutes) the others play out and shake hands and complete the hole and the score cards.

The fourth golfer desperately looking for his ball sees that the contest is over and leaves the green and course without finding his ball. His question is:

What is the rule for playing out of turn (understood that there is no penalty)?

More importantly – What are the right manners for all 4 of the golfers? In the interest of “speeding up play”, surely it is better for all golfers and their caddies to assist with ball finding?

In particular – when the contest is still being competed, is it not good etiquette to assist with finding the ball so that the contest can be completed without one player feeling aggrieved that his ball is lost under circumstances where not all was done by all parties to find it?

I didn't know that golf clothes were considered etiquette. The timing, silence, and cell phones seem like common sense, while respected how a person plays seems like it would be less well- known.

I didn't appreciate the closing remark on how golf is a "gentleman's game".

I really never knew that there is such thing as "golf etiquette". It's like an unspoken promise between the golfers.
